1. DJI Mavic Pro - (Editor's Choice)


The DJI Mavic Pro drone is like the king of consumer-level drones also pretty popular with prosumers and smaller commercial projects.

This is the personal favourite drone of mine.

The combination of design, performance, sensors and media quality is just really hard to beat for the price.

It's basically the size of a hydro flask. It is pretty incredible the fact that you can fold it up and it becomes so compact.

It's super easy to set up too!

You just need to fold out the wings turn it on and you're good to go. There's no complicated setup process. It does come with a mini RC remote which makes using this thing like almost playing a video game.

The one complaint we do have here is that you have to have your phone to use the Mavic.

So you can't just use the drone with the RC remote. You need to physically plug your phone into the RC remote to use it. Sometimes that process can be annoying.

Alternatively, though you can switch into Wi-Fi mode and just use it with your phone or tablet.

There’s a DJI Go app for iOS and Android. The downside here is it's not as quick to set up as using the RC remote. It is for most cases crash-proof and even in sport mode.

But the obstacle avoidance technology is awesome!


You can fly it at full speed at something and it will pull back. When you take your hands off the throttle it just hovers there which is pretty cool.

For most amateurs out there that want to fly a drone.

You can pick this thing up in like five minutes, you can figure out how to use it. It takes some amazing footage on the first-ever flight I had with a mavic pro.

So there is some pretty crazy stuff in terms of media quality.

It's going to record all the way up to 4k at 30 frames per second which looks absolutely gorgeous and it also does 1080p at 60 and 12 megapixel stills.

So the media recording is almost unbelievably good for a drone of this size.

But I have one complaint:

It uses tap to focus. You have to tap on the screen of your phone in order to get it to focus on something.

It's not automatically focusing on the landscape in front of it. So sometimes that can result in blurry shots.

It also has a stabilization gimbal too. So that it makes every shot is smooth even when you're flying at like 20 or 30 miles per hour.

The quick change of direction is not a big deal but just note that it also can be adjusted so you can have it fly and face downward.

In high winds it was pretty hard to manage it just like we wanted. I think it was struggle at higher winds and the battery life will definitely be worn down by fighting against the wind.

DJI says it has a max flight time of 27 minutes but that is in perfect conditions. The average user should expect 22 minutes of flight time. It will depend though whether you're in sport mode or beginner mode.

The DJI Mavic Pro comes with features such as ActiveTrack and TapFly. In addition, it does have GPS, so it automatically sets a home base wherever you launch it.

You can press one button and it will fly directly back to you. You don't have to do anything else. The range on this drone is supposed to be about 4 miles with the RC remote.

But I think the max we ever took it was about a mile. The battery will drain quite a bit.

If you want , you can control it with gestures you can have it focus on a specific subject and then even like take a picture.

If you wants you in with active track you can have it follow you around. Overall the Mavic I would say is a killer drone with very smart great video quality and sensors.

2. DJI Mavic Air

This is the Mavic Air DJI’s latest drone.

It combines features from the company's other drones, the entry-level spark and the higher-end Mavic Pro.

The Mavic Air’s arms fold up for easy travel.

It has a stabilised 4k camera and it can fly for up to 21 minutes.

It has obstacle avoidance too!

This one shoots at up to a 4k resolution at 30 frames per second. You can drop down and shoot it 120 frames per second at 1080p for a nice slow-motion video even with the strong winds.

The three-axis stabiliser kept the camera steady and the video smooth. The quality is generally excellent with much better detail than the spark and it also comes with two new quick shot modes which are basically really easy ways to take selfies with your drone.

The new asteroid quick shot combines a tiny-planet panorama with a droning. The boomerang gives you a fresh way to do a reveal shot.

It has added gesture controls and those controls allow you to push and pull the drone away from you, take off and land with just your hand or wave it around.

The drone follows you in a path it's called smart capture. You have to connect the Mavic Air to your phone first in order to switch into the gesture mode.

Once you're in there though you can take off and land just by putting your palm out in front of you.

We can move it around, fly it back and forth. It will track my hand as I move and then if I walk toward it. It'll go away from me and then if I want to stop and have it walk back with me it can do that too.

If we want to take a photo I just put up a peace sign next to my face the controls have gotten much better. You can actually just wave your hand back and forth and it will move with your hand.

You can push it away from you by getting it to recognise two hands. Then slowly separating your hands it will move away from you. MavicAir also has sensors on the bottom and back.

Those sensors work with the new a pass system which stands for advanced pilot assistant system.

Which keeps it not only from colliding with objects but it'sable to go over them or around them.

So that it can keep moving with a passing gauge. So, having something this small of course it comes at the sacrifice of battery size.

It's got a pretty small battery pack, it lasts up to about 21 minutes with us under ideal conditions.

It reduces battery life along with flying fast or high winds. The temperature we were flying at about 30-degree temperatures today and we got a warning on the screen saying it's too cold for your battery.

If you want a 4k camera on a3-axis gimbal longer flight time greater range and obstacle avoidance and front and back.

If you want a small simple drone for the occasional selfie or aerial shot go with the MavicAir.

3. DJI Phantom 4

DJI’s drone the Phantom 4, you know this is kind of the drone that could help you fly.

That could take off and land or return home.

Then there were drones that could follow you or orbit around you.

But they were always blind to their surroundings.

If it was following you down a ski slope and there was a tree in the way.

The drone doesn't know about that. It's just going to go right into it.

Phantom was using GPS so it was following my phone which was attached to the remote. Now it's using computer vision identifying me as a subject and then following based on that.

That's the real difference is follow me is that its not following me, it's following the signal.

Whereas active track is actually creating that image of the person recognising the 3d image.

That changes because you don't look the same when you turn your head to the side is when you looking forward or when you're walking.

But the Phantom 4 is smart enough to recognise that it's still you and stay locked onto you.

This is really the implementation that we dreamt of which is a combination of computer vision.

That's going to keep the subject completely in the frame and also active obstacle avoidance. So, it senses the error environment around it and will make intelligent decisions to avoid a collision.

Avoiding crashes is a great new feature obviously but DJI is using the computer vision technology to do more.

A new feature called the active track, for example, you trace a circle around a subject you want to keep in the frame the phantom’s on-board computer builds a 3d model of that subject and then automatically follows it.

The Phantom 4 accomplish this feat with the help of three extra cameras, two in the front and one below and two ultrasonic sensors.

It has also added a second on board computer for processing and understanding the data.

With those autonomous flight modes, a beginner can fly this so the learning curve used to be pretty high. It became a lot easier to get up in the air.

But there's still a lot of confidence issues for people getting up in the air for the first time and learning how to get excellent shots.

You could just use the viewfinder like what you can see as the way to set the shot.

We're trying to find an easier interface for first-time pilots to be able to use and there's really nothing simpler than pointing in a direction that you want it to fly it also makes it easier to get smooth shots.

4. DJI Inspire 1

It looks like it came out of a Terminator movie and it flies like a mini fighter jet.

It captures stunning 4k video.

It’s one aircraft that uses advanced technology to provide you with easy intuitive control.

The craft uses transforming landing gear connected by carbon-fiber legs. The gear automatically raises during takeoff.

So, you can have a completely unobstructed view from the onboard camera.

It also improves stability during flight for powerful motors spin. As the 13-inch quick release propellers and the inspire can fly up to speeds of 50 miles per hour.

The 4k 12-megapixel camera provides really smooth video.

This is thanks to its gimbal platform.

It can rotate a full 360 degrees to 120 degrees up and down.

The remote is pretty intuitive and one remote can be used to pilot both the aircraft and the camera.

You can also purchase a dual remote setup where the second remote strictly control the camera of the joysticks using your phone as the display.

DJI slight bridge technology allows you to control you inspire over a mile away while streaming real-time HD video.

DJI Go app is extremely feature-rich. You're shown all of your flight information and camera controls right from the app. You can also edit your videos.

It has flight logs and even practices on a flight simulator. All of these features come together to give you a highly capable platform to create professional videos and capture stunning photos.

The Inspire comes with a carrying case and there are two types of batteries you can use, giving you flight times of 18 to 22 minutes.

I'll be flying with the stock ZenMuse x3 camera but there are options to upgrade to the ZenMuse x5.

When you take off the landing gear it will automatically raise using its vision positioning system.

The same system also helps aid you inspire to hover in place using GPS. Your takeoff point will be set as its return to home point should anything go wrong.

In addition to controlling the inspire manually you can also set intelligent flight functions as well. Set the inspire to follow you and even assign way points to set a flight path.

Assigning a point of interest means you inspire is automatically going to orbit around a point.

You assign this by flying you inspire the point you want. By following the prompts in the app now yours aspire orbits that point with whatever speed you select and you can focus strictly on the camera controls.

You can start your flight path and the inspire will travel to each one of these points.

The coolest feature follows me mode.

When you setting up the inspiring, it is going to follow wherever your remote travels.

If I'm driving the car with the remote on the dash and the inspire is doing the rest all by itself.

Now my car is being followed by a drone.

The inspire is very fun to fly but best of all is what you can capture with its 4k video. This drone is more suited for users with some level of experience with quad-copters.

5. GoPro Karma HERO5

One of the aspects of drone footage that is so exciting and engaging is how smooth it is.

People just want smooth aerial footage.

GoPro Karma has an aerial stabiliser it's a handheld stabiliser, it's a wearable mountable stabiliser and all folds into a nice tidy backpack.

That you can wear while you're hiking, biking, skiing.

The karma drone comes in this really cool folding design. You will get what we call the climber grip.

It's the extension of the flying part of aerial capture and then taking that same stabilisation that you get in the air and you can bring it down to the ground.

The Karma controllers are just really neat and very friendly. The consumers who are looking display in the controller.

It has an embedded screen in it. This is a five-inch 720p display meant to be used outdoors.

It's got about 300 nits of brightness. You also get the karma mountain ring and the karma mountain ring allows you to mount an into the whole ecosystem of GoPro accessories.

So, you imagine you can put this on the top of your car on the side of your bike.

You can mount this onto the tip of a ski pole and really capture incredible stabilised ground footage. The design of front stabiliser system is unique here.

If you look at most drones they'll clip a stabiliser underneath the vehicle in its centre of gravity.

It was really important to reduce that height of the vehicle to allow you to put it into a backpack. In order to do that we have to put the gimbal up front with a stabiliser

6. DJI Phantom 3

Phantom 3 will get the batteries charged much faster and the camera on the professional can shoot 4k.

The Phantom 3 is much smaller than the inspire 1 and setting it up is a whole lot easier.

Take it out and the cameras ready to set up, throw the propellers on and we're ready to sync it up.

So, turn on the remote then the phantom makes sure the light goes green. Then set up your phone app and calibrate your compass that's if you're ready to fly.

The landing gear is fixed so it doesn't move up and out of the way of the camera.

So, you don't have that full 360 degrees that you do with the inspires camera.

One other thing I noticed is that it's a lot easier to get the propellers in your shot with the Phantom. So, you have to be conscious of that as well but the Phantom 3 is quieter than the inspire.

As it's smaller it's a whole lot easier to fly indoors especially since I can throw on prop guards.

Phantom 3 will track the ground to help you keep your drone in place you.

In the remote, you have some useful buttons like back-left trigger here which I have set up to point the camera straight down once the button is pressed.

I like getting top-down shots so this makes it much easier to do. Just push it and it switches shooting modes very quickly.

In camera settings, you can adjust the level of sharpness, contrast, and saturation. The phantom is adding a bit of correction and sharpening to the image.

Phantom 3 is capable of getting some epic footage and the camera isn't quite as good as the inspires camera but it still holds its own really well.

7. Yuneec Q500 4K

The Yuneec typhoon q500 4k it's a quad drone with a 5400 milliamp-hour battery.

That's good for up to 25 minutes of flight.

It has a maximum flight speed of 8 meters per second and a maximum height of 400 feet above ground level.

All pretty standard stuff when it comes to drones. But the most impressive aspect of this drone is the software behind it.

Yuneec may not be as well known as a large drone company out there. But it packs a lot of neat tricks that you want to expect.

The first are the two smart flying modes once it's in the air you can manually pilot to the drone or use the follow me or watch me Modes.

The watch me now the modes are exactly as the name implies. Follow Me mode will have the drone follow you at a set distance no matter where you go you can rotate and frame your camera.

But it will always move in the same directions that you do it even accounts for elevation changes.

The watch me mode will watch you.

In this mode, the front of the drone will always be pointed at you no matter where you fly it.

Both modes offer manual override at any time. But the drone doesn't have sensors built into it to stop itself from running into things like buildings or trees.

This drone comes with a three-axis gimbal stabilized camera that can do 4k at 30 frames per second or 1080p at 120 frames per secon.

And it's super sharp in fact sharper than the GoPro Hero 3 plus black edition.

The camera is removable, the q500 comes with the handheld mouse for the camera so we can use it on its own as a dedicated gimbal stabilized action camera.

You can pair the camera up with an app on your smartphone or use the drone’s remote controller.

The controller or personal ground station as they call it.

It has a built-in Android power interface at the bottom. You can adjust everything on the drone including GPS locations, control calibration, and camera modes.

Basically, everything on the drone other than flying is done through the screen.

It's bright enough for most people but on those very sunny days, Yuneec includes a shade cover

 The built-in gyroscopes did an excellent job keeping it stable even in slightly windy conditions

Yuneec recommends not flying in wind speeds above 8 to 12 miles per hour. The drone including spare blades come neatly packed in a very heavy-duty hard case.
